CABANATUAN CITY – A treat from the “Ate ng Cabanatueños” – screening of the historical epic Heneral Luna movie and free face masks.
Playing the big sister, Mayor Myca Elizabeth Vergara said the city government has made the screening on a huge LED monitor of the movie on the life of Gen. Antonio Luna as precursor to the seminar on the coronavirus disease given to violators of IATF health protocols.
Strictly implemented since July 24, violators are hauled to the Rizal Park inside the city hall compound by eight roaming teams. Each team is composed of two policemen and a personnel of the city risk reduction ang management office, according to Lt. Gladysh Joy Romero, information chief of the city police station.
As of Aug. 7, a total of 1,508 violators have undergone the eight–hour seminar at the open Rizal Park, Romero said.
“I think majority naman talaga ng nasa Cabanatuan ay very concerned sa pandemic na nangyayari ngayon. Pero may mga konting, ang term nga ngayon, ay pasaway so sila yung mga napupunta sa tabi ni Rizal,” Mayor Vergara said.
Underscoring the intensity of the drive, Vergara noted that even her father has been picked up by the police for going outside his residence for being a senior citizen, even with face mask.
“Kaya alam ko yung mga pulis natin ngayon ginagawa nila yung trabaho nila at hindi talaga sila namimili,” Vergara said.
In showing the film on Philippine-American war hero Luna, Vergara said the movie is one of the best films for Filipinos. “I really encourage everyone to watch it,” she said.
Luna, after whom one of the largest streets in the central business district here was named, was killed on June 5, 1899 by members of President Emilio Aguinaldo’s presidential guard at the now Plaza Lucero here, according to historical accounts.
The screening is followed by seminar on Covid-19. “Ngayon, ang susundo sa kanila dun, yung mga kapitan. So, kung naasar na sa inyo yung mga kapitan nyo dahil hindi kayo nakikinig, matatagalan ho yung hintay niyo diyan,” Vergara said.
Violators are released only to village officials. After release, they will be asked to do community service.
Meanwhile, Vergara is now looking into the possibility of imposing wearing of face shields, along with masks, in public markets amid a spike in Covid cases here.
As of Saturday, this city has logged 112 confirmed cases, of which 57 have recovered, 53 active and two deaths.
