JAEN, Nueva Ecija – It’s a threat that came true too soon  for a 49-year-old man who quarrelled with his live-in partner along  a provincial road here Saturday evening. He died as he said.

Sotero Barlis, a resident of Barangay San Vicente here died from severe injuries while being treated at the Gonzales General Hospital in nearby San Leonardo town, according to Police Officer 2 Victor Dalusong, investigator.

Investigation showed that Barlis and his live-in partner identified as Ruth Francisco were walking amid the rain on the road shoulder along Jaen-Carmen (Zaragoza) Road when they engaged in a heated argument over an undisclosed issue to the point that the woman reportedly said she would leave him for good.

This reportedly prompted the victim to warn his girlfriend that he would kill himself by laying on the road.

“Allegedly, the victim abruptly dropped on the road and said “pag umuwi ka, papakamatay na lang ako, papasagasa na lang ako,” Dalusong said.

Francisco told investigator she tried to pull him up to avoid an approaching van but proved to be too late. Police noted that the visibility was poor that time due to rain and darkness of the night.

Apparently, Dalusong reported, the driver of the van did not notice the victim and accidentally hit him.

The van did not stop though and has yet to be identified.

The victim was rushed to the hospital but died while undergoing medical treatment, Dalusong said.
