CABANATUAN CITY – The local government here has started distributing the P2.3-million financial assistance to some 4,621 poor senior citizens under the “Katas ng Vat” (Value Added Tax) program of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Mayor Alvin Vergara said a total of P2,310,500 was delivered personally by Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Regional Director Minda B. Brigoli to his office recently for distribution.

Brigoli also delivered five wheelchairs to the city government for any qualified beneficiary, the mayor said.

The distribution started on Feb. 17 and will run until Feb. 20 in strategic areas, including the Nueva Ecija High School Gymnasium, along Burgos. corner Mabini streets, Vergara said.

Each senior citizen who receives no pension from the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), Social Security System (SSS) or any private pension institution will get P500 one time assistance.

This is in accordance with the Arroyo administration’s “Katas ng VAT: Tulong Para kay Lolo at Lola,” Vergara said.

He added that beneficiaries who could not make it to personally receive the money can send their respective representatives but should submit an authorization letter.

Vergara also said they expected the release of the fund as early as before Christmas. “Pero maraming maraming salamat at malaking tulong ito sa ating mga senior citizen,” he said.
