ANGELES CITY – After the successful staging of the chess, darts and table tennis tournaments, mayoralty aspirant Edgardo “EdPam” Pamintuan is now planning to hold a sports summit in a bid to draft a comprehensive sports program for the city.

He said through a summit, all athletes, coaches and trainers here will have the chance to air their concerns: from training venues, allowances and participation to various prestigious competitions.

“We have to set our short term, medium term and long term goals. But, we also have to listen to our athletes, coaches and trainers because they know what is best for them and for the city,” Pamintuan said.

Some 170 players joined the 1st Edgardo Pamintuan Chess Cup on April 6 in Marquee mall while 86 individuals from various schools in Pampanga joined the table tennis tournament on April 9-10 in SM City Clark.

With hundreds of players wanting to have more tournaments, Pamintuan vowed to hold annual and bi-annual sports events like chess, taekwondo, table tennis, badminton, volleyball, shooting, sepak takraw, marathon, swimming, boxing, billiards, basketball, and others.

Players who joined the table tennis tilts said “after 12 years, nagkaroon ulit ng palaro sa Angeles. Sa mga tournaments kasi kami lalong lumalakas at gumagaling dahil nagkakaroon kami ng sapat na exposure.”

They revealed that the last table tennis tournament which they participated was in 1998 when Pamintuan was still the mayor of this city.

“This is why we need to draft a comprehensive sports program. We have to address their concerns and formulate effective solutions,” he said.

Pamintuan said he wants Angeles to win the overall championship in the prestigious Central Luzon Regional Athletic Association (CLRAA) sports meet in 2011.

“We have to start from the grassroots level, look for players who have the potential and train them well. Then eventually we will produce top caliber athletes who will compete in national and international competitions,” he said.

Earlier, Donell Atienza of Holy Angel University dominated the tables in the 1st, 2nd and 3th and 5th sets of the 1st Edgardo Table Tennis Tournament to win the championship in the Men’s open.
