SAMAL, Bataan — “Kalbaryo” started to be seen on Tuesday in most parts of Bataan, particularly in this town and Abucay in time for the observance of Lent.

The so-called replica of Mount Calvary where Jesus was crucified are also expected to be built in the towns of Orani and Hermosa and Balanga City.

The temporary structures are of different sizes and designs and usually made of common local materials like bamboos, grasses, coconut leaves and other recyclable items.

The Kalbaryo depicts only one theme – that of the passion of Christ on the way to his crucifixion.

On Holy Monday until before the procession on Good Friday, there will be reading by singing of the “pasyon” or Passions of Christ either in taped music or chanting by middle- aged men and women in these open hut-like structures.

Flagellants like “manggagapang” and those carrying crosses on their shoulders and in upward position will be passing the Kalbaryo on Holy Thursday where they will lie flat on the pavement while uttering inaudible short prayers.

The “mandurugo” using bamboo slats to hit their bloodied backs and other flagellants come next on Good Friday.

Fruit drinks and some snacks are served free to the passing flagellants in the Kalbaryo.

Street plays on the crucifixion of Christ or “cenaculo” are commonly held either Holy Thursday or Good Friday in Barangay Calaguiman, Samal; Barangay Mabatang, Abucay; Orani and Balanga City.
