CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Verily a 1970’s slam-bang action on a movie marquee starring The King and perennial baddie The Max. All reference to filmdom though in this instance is the main starrer’s career pre-politics.

Incumbent Bulacan Gov. Daniel Fernando, once a movie star for those not in the know, rose to the height of provincial politics under then-Gov. Willy Alvarado as his “loyal” vice governor. The duo switched positions after Alvarado reached the term limits.

On Wednesday, Alvarado’s wife, former Rep. Marivic Alvarado, filed her husband’s certificate of candidacy as he was reported to be on home quarantine after testing positive of Covid-19.

A sub-plot in the unraveling political narrative: Alvarado’s running mate is former Gov. Jonjon Mendoza, once his bitter rival that he denounced and even filed cases against. The two are united under PDP-Laban.

Fernando, for his part, virtually went the way of the casting couch, taking in fellow movie-TV actor incumbent board member Alex Castro for vice governor. Bannering the National Unity Party. They are expected to file their COCs Thursday.

Bulacan political observers have come to dub the team-ups contending the top provincial posts as “Thunders” a jargon for “old” corrupted from the Tagalog “tanda,” referencing Alvarado-Mendoza, and “Young Blood” for Fernando-Castro, where “Bagets” would have been more movie-like.

Returning to the classic action movies of old, an equally aged Bulakeño

riposted: “Kailan pa ba tinalo ni Max Alvarado si Fernando Poe?”

Yea, just like in the movies. With media reports
