CABANATUAN CITY – A third generation Joson will shoulder the brunt of the Joson clan’s attempt to regain stellar control of the political leadership in Nueva Ecija which it lost in 2007 after four decades.
Incumbent Vice Governor Edward Thomas Joson, 33, will slug it out with Gov. Aurelio Umali, 43, who beat a Joson in the last gubernatorial race.
Joson’s running mate under the Bagong Lakas ng Nueva Ecija (Balane) party is actor-turned politician Rommel Padilla who is an incumbent senior board member.
Umali, whose running mate is Gay Padiernos, is running under the Lakas-CMD-Kampi party. He will, however, take the lead in bringing to victory other local candidates who are running under the newly formed “Unang Sigaw, Partido ng Pagbabago” party which he formed recently.
Balane chair Tomas Joson III, father of Edward, who accompanied the provincial candidates of the party in filing their certificates of candidacy, raised the hands of the candidates in buoyant expectations for the party’s good performance in the coming elections.
“Our family and the party members agreed to field the Joson-Padilla tandem after a series of consultations,” the elder Joson said.
Padilla is a brother of actor Robin Padilla and Bebe (Bibi) Gandanghari.
Robin, who celebrated recently his birthday in their native town of Cuyapo, Nueva Ecija, said he is happy that his brother has been selected to be the running mate of a Joson in the forthcoming political contest.
In 1995, Robin run for vice governor of the province under a party different from the Josons. He was unsuccessful, though, in his bid.
The Balane party was formed in 1987 by the Joson patriarch and political kingpin for three decades, Eduardo Joson. Two of his sons, Tomas III and incumbent Rep. Eduardo Nonato continued his rule when they were elected governors, the former for three terms, and the latter for one term.
His two other sons, Mariano Cristino and Eduardo Joson IV, became vice governors in different times.
The Joson rule ended in 2007 when then Rep. Umali of the 3rd district of Nueva Ecija defeated then vice governor Mariano Cristino for the gubernatorial post.
Umali’s victory was made more sweet when his wife, Czarina, was elected representative of the 3rd district of Nueva Ecija. She is seeking re-election.
The governor’s brother, Emmanuel Antonio, is gunning for a provincial board member’s seat in the 3rd district of the province.
Three other Josons were fielded by the Balane. Eduardo IV and ex-Rep.Josefina,wife of Mariano Cristino, are running for the congressional seats in the first and third districts of Nueva Ecija, respectively, while Rey, a son of Rep. Eduardo Nonato, for board member in the first district of Nueva Ecija.
Incumbent Reps. Joseph Violago and Rodolfo Antonino, both of the ruling party, are running for re-election in the 2nd and 4th districts of Nueva Ecija, respectively.
Ex-Rep. and incumbent presidential assistant Renato Diaz is running for congressman of the first district of Nueva Ecija, also under the Lakas-Kampi-CMD party which is allied with the Umali camp.
Other aspirants for the congressional race are Antonio Prospero Esquivel (PMP), former Rep. Julita Villareal (NP), and Joseph Lorenzo (LP), 4th district; Leopoldo Tomas (Balane) and Clarita Mariano (PGRP or Philippine Green Republican Party), 2nd district; Josie Salva Cruz (PGRP), 3rd district; and Vitaliano Ugalde (Independent), Yolanda de Jesus (PGRP) and Richard Maliwat (Liberal Party), Ist district.
Felino Pajarillo Jr., a registered nurse-businessman, is opposing Umali and Joson for the governor’s post under the Philippine Green Republican Party.
His running mate is businessman and former Talavera, Nueva Ecija councilor Ricardo Bulanadi Santiago.
