John, not necessarily Doe

“NOT THAT Marjorie loved her father Boking less but that she loved her husband John more.”

So we wrote here Friday last week of double visionary Deng Pangilinan paraphrasing Shakespeare in reference to Marjorie Morales-Sambo’s announced candidacy – allegedly upon the prodding of her husband John Sambo – for the mayorship of Mabalacat where seated now her own father Mayor Marino ‘Boking” Morales.

“Motivated by greed and envy, it is Sambo that is pushing Marjorie to run.” So we quoted the keen eyed Deng as saying too.

Greed. Envy. Opportunism and disrespect too were appended to his name.  So who is John Sambo and why are they saying these things about, er, against him?

I knew a John Sambo bred, if not also born, in a farmland in rustic Mesalipit, a barangay that got its name from its geographical entrapment – hemmed in – mesalipit  in Kapampangan – by the towns of Bacolor, Minalin and Sto. Tomas.

I knew a John Sambo who was a dagis-pisamban, literally church rat, figuratively a church habitué, at the time one Rev. Fr. Eddie T. Panlilio served as parish priest of the St. Thomas the Apostle parish.

I heard of a John Sambo who was terribly heartbroken when the lady he was engaged to was exiled by her family to the USA even after – so the talk of the town carried – a wedding day had been set.

Some years after that aborted nuptial, I heard of a John Sambo marrying the daughter of a Mayor Morales.

I knew a John Sambo who served as general factotum to Subic importer Romy Ronquillo who won as Sto. Tomas mayor in 1995, with “Doctor” John Sambo as councilor. Primero consejal, I cannot recall. But he won.

I knew a John Sambo who lost in his re-election bid three years after, his loss being the joke of the town – too patently libelous, too maliciously vicious to write here in its Tagalog original of hayup and duktor  interchangeability. Yeah, John Sambo, thought to be a medical practitioner in his first successful run for councilor, was discovered as an animal doctor in his failed re-election bid.

I heard of a contractor John Sambo who allegedly held a monopoly of the construction of those half-covered courts that became the trademark of then-gubernatorial aspirant 4th District Rep. Rimpy Bondoc. Even as I hear now of a contractor John Sambo as the favored builder of 4th District Rep. Anna York Puyat Bondoc-Sagum.

I read of John Sambo joining and winning some stock car or drag racing in the circuits of Subic and Canlubang. An expensive hobby, I read too.

I heard of a contractor John Sambo who was allegedly awarded the SM City Clark-financed construction of the Balibago drainage system. And a few months back, I heard of him anew being damned for the erosion along Balibago Creek that ate up portions of Systems Plus College, Swagman Hotel, the warehouse of Mister Frosty and some other establishments along the banks. It was said that the drainage system that should have continued to Abacan River was stopped at the Balibago Creek which then bore the tremendous volume of water coming from Clark and upper Balibago.

I heard of a contractor John Sambo living in a P10-million house in Clark Manor in Barangay Duquit, Mabalacat in the company of his wife, kids, mother-in-law, pet tiger and pythons. His BMW sportscar – so I heard too – is parked in his very living room along with his jetski. Swell.

I heard of a contractor John Sambo as a rabid supporter of Ed Panlilio in his gubernatorial run. I heard too of a contractor John Sambo who failed to make the list of accredited constructors in the Panlilio administration.

I heard of a contractor John Sambo alleged as the “point man” in all  construction activities at Xevera Mabalacat, and alleged as the constructor of the Mabalacat “City” Hall thereat.

I heard too that the ceiling of that Mabalacat “City” Hall collapsed on the very day it was supposed to be inaugurated.

Could that collapse be what Deng referred to as: “Alam naman po nang nakakarami kung bakit nagkaganoon si Mr. John Sambo. Nawalan po siya ng kontrata diyan sa may Xevera Mabalacat. Hindi naman po ang local na pamahalaan ng Mabalacat ang kausap niya kundi ang Globe Asiatique (It is public knowledge why Sambo is spiteful. He lost his contracts with Xevera Mabalacat. His deal though is not with the local government but with Globe Asiatique).”

Thus, Deng again:”Dahil nawalan po siya ng kontrata sinisisi niya ang kanyang biyenan. Kung kaya po ngayon galit siya at ginagamit niya ang  kanyang asawa upang labanan ang biyenan. (He blames his father-in-law for the loss so he’s now using his wife to get back at the mayor.)”

So I heard, read, and wrote too. Yeah, this John is certainly no Doe.
