DINALUPIHAN, Bataan – A 16-year old student has remained in comatose for already more than two weeks after he was allegedly attacked by a classmate armed with iron shackles known as “four fingers”.

Some cohorts also reportedly joined the suspect outside the front gate of the Saint John Academy adjacent to the town plaza of Dinalupihan, Bataan.

Police reports showed that Reynaldo Salang Jr. or Jun-Jun, 16, fourth year student at the St. John Academy in Dinalupihan, suffered head and body injuries after he was mauled by a classmate, also 16,  and three outsiders in front of the school in the afternoon last July 29.

Supt. Enrico Vargas, Dinalupihan police chief, said Moises Pasion and Jonathan Punzalan, both 18, and residents here, were arrested right after the incident. The two were, however, able to post bail for a case of frustrated homicide.

The 16-year old classmate identified as “Juan” (not his real name) and Iven Tan, 18, also of Dinalupihan, have remained at-large.

Reynaldo Salang, Sr. of the same town said his son Jun-Jun was first rushed to the Jose Payumo District Hospital in Dinalupihan but was immediately transferred to the Bataan Peninsula Medical Center, a private hospital in the town.

He said his son has remained since July 29 at the Intensive Care Unit of the private hospital where the boy breathes through the help of a ventilator. “Sana mapadali ang kaso, managot ang dapat managot para mabigyan ng hustisya anak ko,” the father said.

Reports showed that the suspect got mad when his girlfriend approached the victim asking for advice concerning “lovers’ spat”.

“Walang kakwenta-kwentang bagay, dahil sa selos nagkaganito anak ko,” the father said.

Gemma Yao, principal of Catholic-run school Saint John Academy, said the victim and Juan are classmates in fourth year under section Danielle. Asked what caused the rift between the two, the principal answered “dahil sa away –sa babae– na kaeskwela nila.”

Posters that read “A Solidarity Fund Drive in Support for Reynaldo Salang Jr.” hang on walls of the Saint John Academy. School principal Yao said they are asking for financial help for the “day to day needs of the victim in the hospital.”

The principal said Juan faces expulsion from the school for carrying deadly weapons. She said that tighter security measures in the school will be undertaken with the assistance of barangay Tanods from three villages here.
