ANGELES CITY – The Green Youth Brigade is set to hold an information drive on how to make mosquito traps on September 16, 12 p.m. at the Heritage Place subdivision clubhouse, Phase 2, Barangay Cutcut, here.
“We took the initiative to share this information to others. It is important that we protect ourselves from mosquitoes especially Aedes aegypti,” said Louie Reyes, head of the Green Youth Brigade.
He added that the information drive is free and open to the public. The venue is just near Noblesse International School and Holy Family Academy.
Noting that there is a cheaper way of making mosquito traps, Reyes said it only costs less than P130 and “a good alternative since it is homemade and environment-friendly.”
“The mosquito trap is easy and simple to make. It is made of all-natural ingredients and there are no harmful chemicals. You can get the ingredients right from your own kitchen,” he said.
He also said that the ingredients are available and can be bought from bakery shops, book stores, grocery stores and supermarkets.
Based on the website: www.mosquitoinfo.info/how-to-build-your-own-mosquito-trap, the materials needed include: empty 1.5 liter or 2 liter soft drink plastic bottle, a cutter or a knife, 2 cups of water, 4 tablespoons of brown sugar, 1 pinch of baker’s yeast, black (art or crepe) paper. The mosquito trap is designed to lure mosquitoes.
“An all-natural solution is poured into the plastic bottle where the mixture of the yeast will generate carbon dioxide that mimics human breathing. It is then covered by black paper. Mosquitoes like dark colors,” it said.
“The plastic bottle can serve as the platform where the mosquitoes are attracted to. Once inside the plastic bottle, the mosquito gets drown quickly. Its wings will get wet. It will be killed in the process.
Put your mosquito trap in areas with heavy mosquito infestation. You can put it in dark corners. You need to replace the solution every two weeks,” it noted.
