MARIVELES, Bataan – A body believed to be one of the passengers of the ill-fated MV Catalyn B was found floating between the vicinity of Fortune Island and Corregidor Island, the Philippine Coast Guard reported Tuesday.
Petty Officer I Joseph delos Reyes, coast guard detachment commander in Sisiman, Mariveles, said the body was identified as Michael Almodal Cajayon, 34, of Tilik, Occidental Mindoro, based on the Comelec ID found in his wallet.
The wallet also contained a letter, four P100- bills and one P20- bill. Coast guard personnel also found a cellphone. Delos Reyes said the body wore a black T-shirt, maong short pants and a red life jacket marked MV Cathalyn-B.
Crews of motor banca “King Mark 2” retrieved the body at about 10:00 a.m. on Monday and immediately reported it to the coast guard detachment in Sisiman.
A funeral attendant of Sanver Funeral Homes in Mariveles said they burned the life jacket because of its bad stench. He said the body was already headless while the hands and other parts of the body were decomposing.
“Mahigit isang linggo na sigurong patay,” the attendant theorized.
The Coast Guard said members of the family of the victim were arriving from Mindoro. Delos Reyes said they contacted the mother through the cellphone sim card they recovered.
