MARIVELES, Bataan- The southwest monsoon or habagat strengthened by typhoons Luis and Mario has rendered most fishermen of Mariveles, Bataan inactive and robbed them of their source of livelihood, fishermen in two villages, one adjacent to Manila Bay and the other to the West Philippines Sea said Saturday.

“Hindi kami nakakapalaot limang araw na dahil malakas ang alon, naghihintay pa kaming kumalma ang dagat” Jovet Ruby, 37, of Barangay Sisiman, said. His fishing banca, as well as many others, were anchored at a cove near a beautiful mountain by the sea in Sisiman adjacent to Manila Bay.

Ruby said that the two katig of one of the big fishing boats were destroyed by strong wind Friday afternoon. “Dalawang linggo na kaming hindi nakakapangisda sa laot dahil malalaki mga alon lalo na ngayon,” said 54-yearold Carlos Sebiga of Barangay Porto del Sol in Mariveles.

Porto del Sol rests adjacent to the West Philippines Sea where big waves were still prevalent on Saturday. “Kung may lumalabas man bihira lang at sapalaran na lamang. Kaya lang wala pa sa laot, madalas tumataob na ang bangka nila,” Sebiga said.
