BALANGA CITY- The local government of Balanga has scheduled on Friday the groundbreaking and unveiling of the proposed design of the urban renewal and redevelopment of the old plaza fronting the St. Joseph Cathedral as part of the 111th Independence Day celebration in this first and only component city of Bataan.

City Mayor Jose Enrique “Joet” Garcia III said the renovation of the 4,000-square meter plaza budgeted for P10 million is expected to be finished before the end of September this year in time for the holding of the first International Bird Festival to be held in the city from October 9 -10, 2009.

The redevelopment of the plaza will be patterned after one in Salamanca, Spain. The mayor said it will feature a story arch where important places to go in Balanga will be shown, a walk of fame, perhaps, similar to one in Holywood, USA and to be lined with palm trees.

Benches will be over the place where promenaders can sit and relax while waiting for the sunset and the coming of the night. It will have a movable stage where stage plays will be held at least once a week.
