ORANI, Bataan – A raging fire of still unknown cause on Monday morning destroyed coconut and mango trees, banana and papaya plants and razed grasses in about five hectares of rolling lands in this town.
Farm caretaker Cris Mosa said they noticed the fire at about 10:00 a.m. had already affected a big area planted to coconuts, papayas, bananas, mangoes and other plants in Barangay Dona, Orani.
He said that 200 coconut trees and 50 papaya plants, both six months old; scores of banana plants and some matured mango trees were destroyed in the farm of Teddy Vianzon alone.
The farm is about 400 meters away from the Roman Superhighway.
Senior Fire Officer 2 Charlie Mendoza, chief of Samal Bureau of Fire Protection, said three firetrucks from the towns of Dinalupihan, Orani and Samal helped in containing the blaze and prevented from inflicting further damage on many trees and plants.
The town fire chief estimated that the fire almost cleared more or less five hectares of farm lands. Mendoza said that in grass fires, culprits are usually not known.
