FLORIDABLANCA, Pamp. – “Connectivity is a must. We thank Manny Pangilinan and Smart for helping us provide this.”

Thus said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in her speech yesterday as she expressed gratitude to Smart-PLDT President and CEO Manuel “Manny” Pangilinan for providing WiMax internet service at the Paguiruan High School (PHS) here under the Smart Schools Program.

Arroyo said the top wireless service in the country had helped the government’s vision to provide internet access to more than 600 public high schools in the country.

“I am not the guest of honor today but Mr. Pangilinan,” said Arroyo, who was welcomed by Floridablanca Mayor Eduardo Guerrero.

Arroyo stressed that real progress” will come from having “skilled and technology-based workers.”

Ramon Isberto, head of the Smart Public Affairs Group, disclosed that they had given at least internet access and computers to some 270 public high schools.

Smart has chosen PHS as the “showcase” for the first-ever WiMax service at a public school. There are some 700 students in the school.

Department of Education (DepEd) Sec. Jesli Lapus also thanked Pangilinan for helping his office improve the quality of public education.

Pangilinan, for his part, said he had continuously given the donation to the school “due to the prodding of Lapus.”

“Apart from connectivity, the PHS will receive a Smart Teacher’s Learning Resource Center consisting two computers, two webcams, a printer and scanner,” said Smart in a statement. The leading wireless network company will also give teacher training in computer literacy and ICT integration in the classroom.
