ANGELES CITY – “We read about their heroics in the newspapers daily and we must give something back to them.”

Thus said yesterday Annie Garcia, president of SM Supermalls, as she led the opening of the Global Pinoy center at the SM Clark. She added that the new center will benefit overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families.

“It’s not just the government that should help and assist the OFWs. But the private sector as well,” said Garcia. She disclosed that the Global Pinoy center at SM Clark was third to be opened among the branches of the Henry Sy-owned malls in the country.

Garcia said at least 10 Global Pinoy centers will be established to assist the OFWs. She added that they also opened a Global Pinoy center in Bulacan at SM Marilao.

Asked to give an example of the assistance they will give, Garcia said that children of OFWs will be given discounts on their tuition and other fees at schools owned by the Sys. One of which is the University of Asia and the Pacific in Manila.

“Overseas Filipino workers can now process all their documents, requirements, remittance and hold videoconferencing with their loved ones at the Global Pinoy Centers located in the SM supermalls all over the country,” said the Sys in a statement shortly after the opening of the Global Center at the SM Mall of Asia last December 10.

Angeles City Tourism Officer Pie Flores said they had been asked by SM Clark to support the Global Pinoy center.

“We are supporting it because so many OFWs are from our city,” said Flores.

No less than Mayor Francis “Blueboy” Nepomuceno, Vice Mayor Vicky Vega-Cabigting, Mabalacat Vice Mayor Pros Lagman  and Department of Tourism (DOT)  regional director Ronnie Tiotuico attended the opening of Global Pinoy center.
