ABUCAY, Bataan- Some 2,200 runners on Saturday braved the cold morning and participated in the “Heroes Run” from the town plaza here to the Gawad Kalinga Village adjacent to the Roman Expressway.
The participants coming from various sector assembled as early as 4 in the morning with the run for a cause starting at 5 a.m. Mayor Ana Santiago said it was a project of GK and the municipality of Abucay. “Gusto naming mabigyan ang mga kababayan naming walang bahay ng maayos na tirahan.”
The mayor said they will be constructing 153 houses in addition to 25 houses already built at the GK Village.
Jon Ramos, GK Area Coordinator in Central Luzon, described the undertaking as a historical run. “We want to gather funds to build houses for the homeless in Abucay. The enthusiasm we saw from people participating showed the spirit of volunteerism, bayanihan,” he said.
“Gusto kong makatulong sa mga taong walang bahay,” answered Nathaniel Agnanum, 11, Grade 6 pupil, when
asked why he joined the cold morning run. The boy said many of his schoolmates and teachers from the Tomas Pinpin Elementary School were also among the many participants.
