Girder falls on workers: 2 killed, 3 hurt

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT — Two scaffolders were killed while three others were injured at the Jadjad Bridge construction site along the Subic Freeport Expressway in Barangay Tipo, Hermosa, Bataan Tuesday afternoon.

Citing initial investigation, Hermosa police chief Major Jeffrey S. Onde said that at about 1:20 p.m., the steel girder that provided temporary post support to the bridge collapsed, falling on construction workers.

Vivincio Pamisa and Marvin Tajores, who were working right under the 18-meter 180-ton girder, were killed.

The injured were identified as Joel Pitel, John Ray Salatan, and Peter Pahilan all construction workers of Sta Clara International Corp., the contractor of the expressway widening project.

Police are still conducting investigation.
“We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate accident,” said Atty. Meiline Maquiling, spokesperson of Sta. Clara International Corp., assuring that the company will provide due assistance to the victims and their families, and that appropriate actions are being taken to address the incident.

“Safety is, and shall remain, a paramount concern of the company,” Maquiling said.
