A dazzling 16-foot parol lit up Los Angeles, California, showcasing the artistry and craftsmanship of City of San Fernando’s lantern makers on a global stage. Illuminated with 1,500 bulbs and powered by two sets of 24-channel sequencers, the giant lantern was the highlight of the “Lunsod Lunsad Project,” a collaboration between the City Government of San Fernando and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
The grand lighting ceremony took place at Seafood City, the venue partner for the event, and drew crowds of Filipinos and locals eager to witness the brilliance of the Home of the Giant Lanterns.
Six talented lantern makers from San Fernando, led by master craftsman Arvin Quiwa, meticulously crafted and assembled the lantern.
Joining him were Lervin Quiwa, Christian Adrian Quiwa, Gener Gudez, Bon Jovi Guevarra, and MJ Dimasangal. Arvin Quiwa expressed pride in the team’s work, sharing advice for fellow lantern makers: “Sa lahat ng lantern makers, mahalin lang nila ang kanilang ginagawa.
Pagbutihan pa ang kaalaman nila sa paggawa ng parol para sila man ay uusbong ang kanilang skills sa paglikha ng parol.” San Fernando City Tourism Officer Ching Pangilinan reflected on the achievement, saying: “Still surreal. Been working on this alongside our preparations for the Giant Lantern Fest 2024.
All the way from San Fernando, Pampanga to San Fernando Valley, CA!” The event was not only a celebration of craftsmanship but also a heartfelt tribute to Filipino culture.
Quiwa shared how the lantern brought joy and nostalgia to kababayans in the U.S., saying, “They were very happy to have a piece of their culture in their home away from home.” The giant lantern will remain illuminated at Seafood City until December 25, with hopes to make the tradition an annual event in Los Angeles and expand its reach to other parts of the world.
