SUBIC BAY FREEPORT – Stirring the witches’ cauldron for some terrifying spell, so to speak, are employees of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority prepping up for the upcoming Subic Bay Halloween Shack Competition at the Mini Golf Course, Waterfront Road here starting Oct. 24.

“We are transforming the former Mini Golf Course into a Halloween wonderland where each Strategic Business Unit (SBU) can showcase their terrifying creativity and flair for all to enjoy,” said SBMA tourism manager Jem Camba.

Camba enjoined all SBMA employees to participate and showcase their best in celebrating Halloween, aiming to boost tourism activities in the area. The shacks, which will be unveiled on Oct. 24, will be open for public viewing until October 31.

The winning SBU will take home ₱50,000.

Halloween traditions in Subic date back to its days a US naval base, with the all-American jack-o’-lantern and trick-or-treat tradition being a long-standing practice in the residential areas even after the US withdrawal. However, trick-or-treating was temporarily halted during the Covid-19 pandemic, but was resumed a couple of years after, with new collaborative events like the annual Subic Bay Hauntfest. The Hauntfest offers a diverse range of activities, including costume competitions, live music, and local cuisine. Press release
