CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – “The frog doesn’t just jump but leaps into progress like this city.”
Thus said Jim Jimenez, chairman of the “Pyestang Tugak 2010,” during the press conference here announcing the start of the annual Frog Festival on October 7. Its theme for this year is “Kokak, kokak, sisigpo la ring tugak kayantabe ing siyudad.”
Jimenez said the festival designed to preserve the Fernandinos rich tradition in the frog-catching process will feature new events such as Frog Chorale.
SM Pampanga asked the city government led by Mayor Oscar Rodriguez to stage the Frog Chorale at its mall on October 8.
A group will asked to sing any song using only “Kokak” in the lyrics, it was learned in mechanics for the Frog Chorale.
Rodriguez, for his part, said events such as Frog Festival “helps the people become productive.”
“It seems we are always in a hurry. We want to make activities all-year round to give a level of confidence to the Fernandinos and propagate a culture of hardwork,” Rodriguez said.
City Tourism Officer Ching Pangilinan, in a statement, said “these traditions are fast disappearing due to inevitable progress and urban growth – thus, there is an inherent need to rekindle and promote these rich Kapampangan frog traditions.”
“This gave birth to the Piestang Tugak – The Annual San Fernando Frog Festival. This was borne from the Kapampangan traditional practice of frog – catching and delicacy making of the native amphibian,” she added.
The other events are Frog Mascot, Street Dance, Lundag Tugak and other Frog Games, Paduasan, KOKAKtober Fest and Kapampangan Cuisine Exhibit.
