CAPAS, Tarlac (PIA) — Former Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff and Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Roy Cimatu, a son of a World War II veteran, led the Joint Tribute to All Filipino Heroes and Paggunita sa Capas at the Capas National Shrine, emphasizing the importance of honoring those who fought for the country’s freedom.
The annual Tribute to All Filipino Heroes, traditionally held in Corregidor Island, honors Filipino heroes, patriots, martyrs, and defenders who fought for the country’s freedom—from the time of Lapu-Lapu to the Philippine Revolution, the Filipino-American War, and World War II.
In his message, Cimatu underscored that the tribute represents the shared legacy of those who laid down their lives for freedom, shaping the nation’s destiny and identity.

“This event allows us to reflect on their sacrifices and honor their memory, ensuring that their stories continue to inspire future generations,” he added.
Alongside this tribute, Paggunita sa Capas is a day of remembrance for those who endured the Bataan Death March and became prisoners of war at Camp O’Donnell in Capas, Tarlac.
The site, once a Japanese concentration camp, became an internment ground for about 20,000 Filipino and 1,600 American soldiers, many of whom perished due to sickness, deprivation, and enemy brutality during the war.
Cimatu described the commemoration as a solemn observance dedicated to remembering the harrowing experiences of the Bataan Death March during World War II.
He stressed that the event not only commemorates the resilience of veterans who endured unimaginable hardships but also serves as a stark reminder of the cost of war and the fragility of freedom.
“As we gather to remember those who suffered and fought against oppression, we cultivate a deeper appreciation for the liberty we enjoy today, understanding that these freedoms were hard-won through the sacrifices of countless individuals,” Cimatu said.
Moreover, Cimatu noted that the significance of these events goes beyond remembrance, as they foster a sense of unity and national pride among Filipinos.
“By honoring both historical and contemporary heroes, we reinforce the values of bravery and patriotism that have been passed down through generations. This collective recognition empowers us as a nation to uphold the ideals of justice, equality, and freedom that our heroes fought for, reminding us of our responsibility to carry their legacy forward in our daily lives,” he highlighted.
Furthermore, Cimatu stated that the Joint Tribute to All Filipino Heroes and Paggunita sa Capas not only honors the past but also serves as a catalyst for reflection and action in the present.
“As we pay homage to those who have sacrificed so much, we are called to live out our ideals, ensuring that their struggles and triumphs are never forgotten,” he added.
During the ceremony, Cimatu led a wreath-laying ceremony alongside officials and representatives from veterans’ organizations, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Manila, the Philippine Coast Guard, and the Philippine Navy.
Also joining were the provincial government of Tarlac, the municipal government of Capas, descendants of World War II veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and members of the youth sector. (CLJD/MAECR, PIA Region 3-Tarlac)
