Morong, Bataan – In line with its commitment to protect and preserve the environment and the abundant marine resources in this municipality, the Municipal Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Management Council (MFARMC) launched a mangrove reforestation project along Sabang River at Barangay Sabang, this municipality, Friday morning.

Joining this activities were some 60 students and faculty staff of Bataan Peninsula State University, barangay officials headed by Kagawad Leandro Labios, community relations officers of Public Relations Department, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority, BFARMC womenfolk members and fisherfolk of Barangay Sabang.

Morong MFARMC Chairman Restituto del Rosario said more than 300 mangrove seedlings and propagules were planted along the riverside of  Sabang.

The fisherfolk organization in Sabang maintained a nursery and established a propagation area of native mangrove species by germinating seeds, growing the seedlings to suitable size and distributing them to various government institutions for planting in the rivers.

“The mangrove reforestation program will ensure long-term benefit not only to the fisherfolks but to the whole municipality,” Del Rosario said.

“Holding this activity is an opportunity for our youth to increase their awareness on the importance of mangroves as aids in controlling soil and beach erosions and pollution control,” Del Rosario said referring to the participation of the BPSU students in the mangrove planting activities.

Conservation can only work with information and this activity is one way of inculcating in the minds of our youth that they are part of the community that will preserve and protect the environment,” he added.

Mangroves provide habitat for fish and other crustacean, restore and stabilize shorelines, prevent soil erosion, and filter polluted water.

Kagawad Labios lauded the fisherfolk’s initiative to restore the river’s ecosystem.

“If the program continues, in five-year time, this river will not only help sustain livelihood for the fisherfolk but will enhance the tourism industry here,” Labios added.

Sabang River is connected to the pristine and white sand shoreline of Morong where many tourists spend their beach combing  and swimming activities specially during summer season.
