CITY OF SAN FERNANDO –The refrigeration and cold storage facility here of major food processers and suppliers in the country opened on Friday an environment- friendly technology which reduces carbon emissions.

Alfredo Lagman Jr., president and CEO of ALMA Refrigeration and Cold Storage Inc. in barangay San Agustin, led the inauguration of their state-ofthe- art facility that houses modern energy-efficient refrigeration equipment with inverter drives.

Lagman, who invited Sen. Francis Pangilinan in the event, claimed that their facility is the first-ever environment-friendly cold storage in the country.

Lagman said that “while refrigeration may suggest use of refrigerants that are harmful to the environment, ALMA’s technology uses environment- friendly refrigerants including cold room lighting from light emitting diodes (LED).”

Lagman stressed that their facility along McArthur Highway “helps in the reduction of carbon emissions and doesn’t use that much electric power.”

“When companies do not use that much electricity, they help preserve the environment,” added Lagman, who was appointed by President Aquino as Honorary Consul of Mongolia to the Philippines on March 12.

The ALMA facility is qualified for green-compliance requirement, as certified by Starking, Inc., a duly registered all-Filipino Engineering and Contracting corporation in the field of Industrial Refrigeration & Heat Transfer Technology, said Lagman.

He added that no government of f ice has the mandate to certify the environment- friendly compliance of cold storage and refrigeration facilities.

For his part, Pangilinan said that the national government is fortunate to have private firms such as ALMA which helps the economy by helping the preservation of food.

Lagman said that other cold storage facilities could not invest on environment- friendly technology because it’s capital-intensive.

He urged the government to provide financial and loan assistance to cold storage facilities. Lagman said “efficient cold storages” could help reduce and maintain prices of food.

“We keep the food products when they are abundant so that they can be put out when the supplies are scare.

There by we can help stop too much price increases,” said Lagman, referring to the law of supply and demand.
