SCIENCE CITY OF MUÑOZ – Fire gutted a lone house here early Tuesday morning killing two persons, one of them an employee of the Commission on Elections assigned in an eastern Nueva Ecija town.

SPOI Efren Cara, duty investigator of the police here, identified the dead as spouses Marcos Urbano, 38, and Imelda, 58, a Comelec officer in Llanera town.

Cara said the fire, believed to be caused by faulty wiring, was tapped in at 1:30 a.m. and was tapped out after in less than an hour.

Only the bungalow-type house of the couple, located at Teacher’s Village in Barangay Poblacion South here, was destroyed by the fire.

Neighbors of the victims said they were awakened by the cracking sound of glasses being gobbled by the fire but heard no voices asking for help. They believed the victims were deep in sleep and were trapped at once by smoke and flames in their room.

Cara said only the two victims were staying in the burnt house. He added that the gate of the yard, including the entrance doors of the house, was padlocked preventing easy access by responding firemen.
