Filipinos hopeful for 2024 – PAHAYAG Survey

Manila, December 18, 2023 – Results from the PAHAYAG End of Year (P-EOY2023) survey conducted between November 29 and December 4, 2023, revealed a notable upswing in Filipino optimism, as views towards the current state, national direction, and economic prospects experience positive shifts.

Views on the Current Country’s State have seen a slight improvement, rising from 43% to 45%. Noteworthy regional variations include North-Central Luzon increasing from 43% in Q3 to 49% in Q4, South Luzon from 40% to 45%, and Visayas from 41% to 47%. However, Mindanao shows a sharp decline, dropping from 50% to 44%. Additionally, specific age and income groups display fluctuations, with 18-24-year-olds witnessing an increase from 35% to 47%, while 25-29-year-olds decline from 52% to 43%. Middle-income voters also experience a shift from 48% to 38% in Q4.

Views on the Country’s Direction have notably recovered, surging from 61% in Q3 to 66% in Q4. Regional variations showcase positive trends in North-Central Luzon (60% to 64%), South Luzon (54% to 62%), and Visayas (57% to 65%). However, Mindanao sees a slight decline from 70% to 67%. Age and income groups also reflect positive changes, with 18-24-year-olds increasing from 50% to 63%, 30-39-year-olds from 66% to 71%, and middle-income voters from 58% to 68% in Q4.

National Economic Prospects for the Next Quarter show a significant improvement, climbing from 57% in Q3 to 67% in Q4. This positive trend is observed across all demographics.

Household Financial Prospects for the Next Quarter also exhibit a positive trajectory, increasing from 62% in Q3 to 70% in Q4. This optimistic outlook is shared across all demographic groups.

Overall, positive sentiments about the state of the country heading into the year 2024 have seen a substantial increase from 59% to 68%. However, negative sentiments about the country’s state heading into 2024 have declined from 41% to 32%.

When compared to the previous year, about 6 in 10 respondents feel the nation is in a better place. Notably, lower-income households (18%) and non-working individuals (17%) express more uncertainty, leaning towards the undecided category.

PAHAYAG 2023 End of the Year Survey (P-EOY2023), conducted by PUBLiCUS Asia Inc., is an independent and non-commissioned survey. The survey period was from 29 November to 04 December 2023 using purposive sampling composed of 1,500 respondents randomly drawn from the market research panel of over 200,000 Filipinos maintained by the Singapore office of PureSpectrum, a US-based panel marketplace with multinational presence. The sample was restricted to registered Filipino voters maintained by PureSpectrum, a US-based panel marketplace with a multinational presence.
