ANGELES CITY – A former university professor charged by the Department of Justice (DOJ) with 32 counts of rape of a minor here was transferred last week from a jail in Jeddah to Riyadh jail in Saudi Arabia part of a process to deport him.

The National Bureau of Investigation-Interpol (NBI-Interpol) informed the parents of the victim that suspect Arnel Atienza Ocampo, 51, is now in Riyadh jail and could be deported soon to face the charges before a court in this city.

Ocampo, 51, married with two children and a former professor at the Holy Angel University (HAU) here, was arrested and jailed in Jeddah last December 6, 2010 by Saudi authorities upon the request of Justice Sec.  Leila De Lima.

“The NBI-Interpol told us that Jeddah authorities formally communicated with the NBI about the transfer of Ocampo from Jeddah to Riyadh as part of plans to finally deport him,” said the parent who asked not to be named to protect the interest of his daughter-victim.

The victim’s parents said they were “elated” by this development. “Justice is finally within our reach. Ocampo must face the consequences of his crime. He is in jail for four months now and he must be jailed for life,” the father said in an interview with Punto.

The ex- HAU professor was charged with rape by the victim, who was his student then 16 years old. Ocampo was indicted last November 2009. Before five arrest warrants were issued against him by Regional Trial Court Judge Angelica Paras-Quiambao last Nov 2009, two of which barred any bail, Ocampo sneaked out of the country.

Ocampo was reported to have left the country on May 28, 2009 to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia but he was later placed in the ‘red notice’ of the Interpol in February, 2010, making him a wanted person worldwide.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) cancelled the passport of Ocampo in April, 2010 on the request of then Justice Sec.  Agnes Devanadera.

The whereabouts of Ocampo surfaced after broadcaster Ted Failon featured in August last year in his television program the case of the missing Ocampo. This led co-workers of Ocampo in Jeddah to spill out information on where the fugitive was staying.

Meanwhile, the father of the victim said he asked the help of Rep. Emy De Jesus of Gabriela party list in pursuing an administrative complaint he filed with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) more than a year ago against HAU for the university’s alleged negligence and failure to check the background of Ocampo before hiring him.

The father said Ocampo already had a record of sexual harassment in another school in Magalang town when the HAU employed him as professor.
