Explosion in ship hurts electrician

    MARIVELES, Bataan — An electrician suffered undetermined degree of burns on his face and body when a minor explosion occurred inside the engine room of a passenger vessel docked at the Herma Shipyard here Thursday before noon.

    Supt. Crizalde Conde, Mariveles police chief, identified the injured as Elexer Pilapil, 33, resident of Oriental Mindoro.

    Police said the victim was rushed to the Maheseco Hospital in Mariveles but was transferred to the Bataan General Hospital in Balanga City and later to an Olongapo City hospital for treatment of burns.

    Initial investigation showed that yard personnel informed police of an explosion inside passenger vessel M/V Natasha while under drydock in the shipyard in Barangay Baseco at about 11:20 a.m.

    The victim was alone in the engine room cleaning a portion of an electrical generator using a pressurized water sprayer.

    “Unknown to victim, his water sprayer hit a live wire connected to a generator and triggered to ignite a fire to assorted flammable substances like crude oil, gasoline, engine oil and fumes. This caused accidental explosion inside the engine room,” police report said.

    Conde said the engine room incurred still unknown amount of damages. He said investigation still going on.
