CABANATUAN CITY – Another former village official was killed by still unidentified gunmen in broad daylight attack in a "carinderia" in Barangay Mabini Homesite here on Monday.
Supt. Efren Ramos, city police chief, identified the victim as Virgilio Avanceña, 64, former chairman of Barangay Magsaysay Sur, here.
Investigation disclosed that the victim, also a businessman, was taking his lunch at Joey’s Kambingan along Cabanatuan City-Papaya Road when the suspects arrived and without a word fired at him.
The victim succumbed to gunshot wounds on his head, police said. Scene of the crime operatives reported the incident happened at about 12:14 p.m.
The suspects fled immediately toward Baranagay Sta. Arcadia, investigation showed.
Police have yet to establish the identities of the suspects as well as the motive behind the assassination.
Several former and incumbent barangay heads were killed in the province in the past. Nueva Ecija was tagged as one of the hotspots in the country this coming presidential and local elections.
