CABANATUAN CITY – About 24 high school students from a university here were rushed to a local hospital Thursday afternoon due to food poisoning.

Ana Chua, administrative service manager of the Phinma Education network which owns Araullo University, said students mostly second year high school were treated at the Premier Medical Clinic here.

Ma. Elena Romasanta, a 2nd year high school student, said she and her classmates had just finished eating egg caldo (lugaw with hard boiled egg) at the school canteen when they suffered dizziness, stomach pains and vomiting.

She said some of her classmates immediately went to the school clinic while others rushed to their respective teachers.

Chua said school officials immediately ordered temporary closure of the canteen. She was quick to add that investigation has yet to pinpoint the cause of the food poisoning was the food served at the school canteen.

Samples of the food were taken and placed under study, she noted. The canteen operates as a concessionaire, she added. “But it’s unfair to blame them right away,” she stressed.

Chua said the school administration will see to it that the students are safe even after they are released from the hospital.

A mother of one of the students questioned the manner the food samples are taken.
