CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – “Poverty alleviation through education.”

First bold phrase displayed on the website of Councilor Jimmy Lazatin, who topped the race in 2007 and established himself as “the working councilor” of this city. He left his luxurious life and decided to join politics to push for quality free education in his native city.

“I used to play golf at least four times a week. And one day, I asked myself should I just be playing my favorite game all my life,” said Lazatin, the first guest of Punto’s Kapihan one-on-one’s meeting with top leaders and personalities in Central Luzon.

“I must help in my own little way my fellowmen, the less fortunate most specially, as I have been blessed,’ added Lazatin, a scion of the landed gentry in Pampanga. Lazatin heads two vital committees at the city council – environment and education.

“I myself chose to head the committee on education. Others don’t like it because it requires tons of work and time,” said Lazatin. He added that “this is one  way I could help send more young poor children to school, and keep them there.”

Lazatin stressed that the successful education program could not have been done without the leadership of Mayor Oscar Rodriguez.

“We have done so many things for education and the city under the helm of Mayor Oca,” said Lazatin.

Lazatin disclosed that the city government is hopeful that the community college will open this year. He added that some 250 college students will temporarily have night classes next school year at the Pampanga High School as part of the community college program of the Rodriguez administration.

“The mayor wants to start it as soon as s possible and he knows the value of education,” he said.

Lazatin said the council led by Vice Mayor Edwin Santiago are set to pass an ordinance “institutionalizing” the scholarship program for college students.

“We want to allot funds not coming from Special Education Fund (SEF),” said Lazatin. “We could not be there at the city hall forever and we must ensure that the scholarship program stays.”

He also announced that Rodriguez is set to establish three more integrated schools in the city. There are eight existing ones.

“The integrated school system is a way of bringing the school closer home to the students whereby they save on baon, transport fare and allowances, even as the integrated concept enhances the learning process,” Lazatin explained.

Another service initiative Lazatin has been sponsoring is his feeding program for schoolchildren. He said he and his sponsors allot P120,000 for a 60-day continuous feeding program on public schools here.

“How do expect children to learn well when they have empty stomachs,” said Lazatin. He added that they deworm, re-weigh and monitor the students they feed to monitor their progress.

Councilor Jimmy Lazatin is not just a legislator, he is also engaged in various projects for the youth such as feeding programs and anti child-pornography campaigns, said his website named after himself. He is streamlining projects for affordable education and global warming awareness, it added.
