ANGELES CITY – For the first time after more than a decade, top table tennis players in Pampanga will again have the chance to compete and bring home cash and trophies in a prestigious sports event this summer.

“I have waited for this competition. Each of us will be put to a test, a test of skills, speed and experience,” said Carlo Puno, Joselito Abedoza, Timothy Perez and Donell Atienza of Holy Angel University who were among the first 10 participants of the “Atty. Edgardo D. Pamintuan Table Tennis Invitational tournament.” It will be held on April 9-10 at the Event Center in SM City Clark.

Table Tennis players and enthusiasts from various schools, colleges and universities in Pampanga like the Angeles University Foundation, Guagua National College, University of the Assumption in San Fernando, Systems Plus College Foundation, and Republic Central Colleges are also expected to join the event.

Tournament director Fausto Sengson said players in the college level and professionals could join in the men’s open category. High school students and out-of-school youths will fall under the boy’s open category while another classification will be for women.

Pamintuan, former chairman of the Subic-Clark-Alliance for Development Council, said table tennis is one of the safest sports since there is less physical contact resulting to less cases of injury.

“Filipinos should excel in this kind of sports since we have the potential to become world champions in the future,” said Pamintuan, noting that height is not a big factor to win games like in basketball.

The event aims to gather the best table tennis players in Pampanga who have the potential to compete in other prestigious tournaments in Central Luzon and in the whole country, he added.

International Table Tennis Federation rules will be strictly implemented, officiating officials said.

“Since registration is free, we will be limiting the number of participants. It will be a first come first serve basis,” Sengson said.

Meanwhile, Pamintuan’s darts tournament, with a guaranteed P20,000 cash out, will also be held on April 9 on the same venue.
