CUYAPO, Nueva Ecija – Novo Ecijanos received the early treat of having a showbiz personality in the political race.

Three days after Senior Board Member Rommel Padilla, himself an actor who is running for vice governor, filed his certificate of candidacy along with gubernatorial tandem, Vice Gov. Edward Thomas Joson, his younger brother Robin Padilla staged a star-studded birthday here Monday night.

Their equally popular sibling, “BB Gandanghari”, also went up on stage and declared support for the Joson-Padilla tandem. The Hilera Band, a music group composed of the board member’s siblings, also performed numbers.

But both Joson and Padilla were smart to declare before the thousands of people gathered at the town’s auditorium their readiness in effective governance beyond looks and entertainment.

“Ang pinakamaganda pong natanggap kong regalo ay ang malaman ko na magkakaroon na ng bagong pag-asa ang mga Novo Ecijano,” the actor said referring to his brother and Joson.

Joson and Padilla re running under Bagong Lakas ng Nueva Ecija or Balane, a party created by the late Gov. Eduardo Joson which brought him back to the Capitol in the first election after then President Corazon Aquino unseated local executives.

They are facing incumbent Gov. Aurelio Umali and businessman Gay Padiernos, a Lakas-Kampi-CMD member who ran and lost in Nueva Ecija’s fourth congressional district in 2007.

However, Umali’s Lakas-Kampi-CMD had its new Nueva Ecija theme sung by celebrity singer Ronnie Liang. Liang himself presented the song to Novo Ecija a couple of months ago.

But Joson said that beyond personalities and looks, candidates should be judged based on their ability to govern and sincerity to serve.
