BALANGA CITY – The City Disaster Operations Center (CDOC) on Friday conducted its quarterly earthquake drill for more than 500 pupils and teachers of the Central Elementary School here.

Engr. Dennis Mariano, Balanga CDOC officer in-charge, explained that the drill is to prepare children on what to do for their safety in cases of disasters like earthquakes.

School principal Agnes O. Magdalera said that the project guides both the school children and the teachers. “Ang earthquake drill ay mahalagang kaalaman para sa mga bata upang matuto silang mapangalagaan ang kanilang sarili na kung angkop ang kanilang kilos kung may lindol ay maiiwasang masaktan sila,” she said.

“Ang mga guro naman ay mabibigyan ng kaalaman kung paano ma-rescue at mabigyan ng pang-unang lunas kung may masaktang bata sa panahon ng lindol,” Magdalera said.

The drill went this way: Children and teachers were having their regular classes when the bell rang that signaled them to duck. When the bell stopped after a minute, the children under the guidance of their teachers calmly walked out of the classrooms with their hands over their heads towards a designated evacuation center marked with printed arrows.

After a roll call, the teachers found out there were two children left behind in two separate classrooms. Two groups of teachers in hard hats rushed towards the classrooms and attended to the injured children.

Rushing the child out of the classroom, the teachers administered first aid and placed the boy on a stretcher. They then brought the boy to a waiting ambulance.

After the earthquake exercise, representatives from the Department of Education, police, barangay, Bureau of Fire and city and provincial disaster coordinating councils made their evaluations and recommendations.

Jessie Ferrer, DepEd city superintendent, lauded the teachers. “Talagang maasahan ng mga guro sa lahat ng pagkakataon,” he said.
