TARLAC CITY (PIA) — The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Tarlac confiscated seven defective weighing scales used by vendors at the Paniqui Public Market in Paniqui, Tarlac.
The seven weighing scales were found to be defective out of the 130 weighing scales checked and monitored in the public market.
DTI OIC Provincial Director Florencia Balilo explained that the monitoring of weighing scales aims to protect consumers pursuant to Republic Act 7394, otherwise known as the Consumer Act of the Philippines.
“This consumer protection program is carried out through the synergy between the DTI, the local government units, and consumer organizations. It aims to safeguard consumers’ interest by making sure that the weighing scales are functional and aligned with the regulatory standards,” she added.
The saturation drive was conducted by the agency in coordination with the Tarlac Consumer’s Council Inc. and Local Price Coordination Council of Paniqui.
Meanwhile, the defective weighing scales were confiscated and turned-over to the office of the market administrator.
Balilo added that they likewise monitored the price tags, labels, and the weight of the repacked items.
DTI regularly conducts saturation drives in different public markets to promote consumer welfare and protection, and ensure the practice of accurate weighing measurements among market vendors.
Also, this is to ensure that consumers get the best of value for their money when purchasing products in the market. (CLJD/TJBM PIA-Region 3, Tarlac)
