DTI-3 Reminds: Buy Certified Electrical Products

In line with the observance of Fire Prevention Month this March, the Department of Trade and Industry – Region 3 (DTI-3) calls on consumers and business establishments to strengthen fire prevention efforts by purchasing only certified electrical products and appliances that meet Philippine Safety Standards.

With the dry season increasing the risk of fire incidents, DTI-3 emphasizes the importance of vigilance when buying electrical devices such as extension cords, consumer electronics, circuit breakers, lighting and wiring products, and household appliances.

Consumers are strongly advised to check for the Philippine Standard (PS) Mark or the Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) Sticker before purchasing regulated electrical products. These marks signify that the items have undergone testing and comply with the Philippine National Standards (PNS).

DTI-3 also reminds consumers to exercise extra caution when purchasing imported electrical products, especially those sold online or through unofficial distributors. Imported products covered under mandatory certification must bear a valid ICC Sticker issued by DTI. Consumers are encouraged to verify the authenticity of ICC stickers and avoid products that do not display proper certification, as uncertified imported items may not comply with Philippine safety standards and could pose serious fire hazards.

DTI-3 Regional Director Edna D. Dizon underscored that ensuring product certification is a shared responsibility between businesses and consumers.

“Fire prevention starts with informed decisions. Purchasing electrical appliances and fire safety equipment from legitimate establishments with a valid PS License or ICC Certificate significantly reduces the risk of accidents caused by substandard products,” RD Dizon said.

She added that the PS License and ICC Certificate serve as proof that manufacturers and importers follow strict safety and quality requirements, ensuring reliability and consumer protection.

As part of its consumer protection mandate, DTI-3 continues to conduct regular market monitoring and enforcement operations across Central Luzon to prevent the sale and distribution of uncertified and potentially hazardous electrical products.

To further promote safety, DTI-3 shares the following tips when buying electrical appliances:

  • Always look for the PS Mark or ICC Sticker on regulated products.
  • Buy only from reputable and authorized retailers.
  • Check the product’s wattage and voltage compatibility with your home’s electrical system.
  • Avoid counterfeit, imitation, or unusually cheap products.
  • Inspect wires, plugs, and casings for defects before purchase.
  • Ensure that extension cords and power strips are not overloaded beyond their rated capacity.

“Electrical safety is a critical component of fire prevention. By choosing certified products and practicing responsible usage, we can protect lives, properties, and livelihoods,” Dizon emphasized.

The public is encouraged to report substandard or uncertified electrical products to the DTI-3 Consumer Protection Division or visit the nearest DTI Regional or Provincial Office for assistance.

This Fire Prevention Month, DTI-3 reiterates its commitment to safeguarding consumers and promoting a culture of safety across homes, workplaces, and communities.
