ANGELES CITY – The Pinoy Gumising Ka Movement (PGKM), an advocacy group based in this city, has announced an unsolicited advice to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH): Adopt tree nurseries.
A tree nursery is a place where plants are propagated and grown to usable size.
The PGKM said since the DPWH has earmarked a lot of trees for destruction that are along the national highway, it will be proper for them to adopt tree nurseries so that those that would be cut down can easily be replaced with young trees that can withstand the elements and that early on can even absorb the emissions from passing vehicles.
Plant seedlings usually die after only a short time after planting and exposing them to the elements, unlike if a young tree is planted its chances of survival are greater, PGKM chair Ruperto Cruz said.
He added that tree nurseries are common abroad which explains why trees are spared from destruction because of proper planning and care.
Cruz noted that in China, newly built highways are already lined with trees which could have only come from tree nurseries.
He said young trees could replace the ones marked for destruction without compromising their contribution to the enhancement of the environment.
