CABANATUAN CITY (PIA) — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed a 245-linear meter flood mitigation structure along the Rio Chico River in Guimba, Nueva Ecija.

Located in Barangay Calem, the structure strengthens the community’s defenses against seasonal flooding and enhances public safety.

DPWH Nueva Ecija 1st OIC-Assistant District Engineer Ferdinand Llamas emphasized that the newly completed section reinforces the area’s existing flood defenses.

“This municipality is known for its vast farmlands, which serve as the primary source of livelihood for residents. Thus, this P52.4-million project is a vital step in protecting our local communities. By helping mitigate flood risks, we are enhancing the safety of homes and properties while supporting the agricultural sector,” he said.

Llamas highlighted that flood control projects have long helped preserve farmlands by preventing floodwaters from inundating crops.

“With this structure in place, farmers can cultivate their lands with greater confidence, potentially reducing losses and supporting agricultural productivity,” he added.

Beyond its agricultural benefits, the project has improved infrastructure resilience in the village, giving residents a more secure living environment amid the threat of rising river levels. (CLJD/RPQ, PIA Region 3-Nueva Ecija)
