CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga (PIA) — Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) completed the 846-lineal meter flood control structure in Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija.

Situated along the barangay Bugnan section of the Coronel River, the project is expected to provide residents with protection as the town has been prone to flooding, especially during the monsoon season.

DPWH Nueva Ecija 2nd District Engineer Elpidio Trinidad stated that the six-layered gabion-type flood wall will safeguard agricultural lands from inundation, preventing massive damage to crops and livestock, thereby contributing to food security and stabilizing the area’s agricultural economies.

“By minimizing flood damages, this project ensures the economic stability and growth of barangay Bugnan, reducing the likelihood of losses for farmers and enabling communities to recover quickly from flood events while sustaining economic activity and livelihood,” Trinidad added.

Resident Marilyn Eugenio Del Rosario said she witnessed the struggles of the residents every time the river rages.

“Sa nakikita ko sa sitwasyon ng kanilang mga pananim, nasasalanta po dahil sa lakas ng tubig kaya yun pong mga tao naapektuhan. Ngayon po hindi namin nararanasan yung pag baha buhat nang naitayo iyan, pero mayroon na po kaming pag-asa sa puso namin pwede kaming maligtas dahil sa pagkakagawa niyan,” she shared.

Construction of the P88.4-million project commenced in February 2023 and was completed in May.

It is part of the agency’s Flood Management Program funded under the 2023 General Appropriations Act. (CLJD-PIA 3)
