CABANATUAN CITY (PIA) — Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) commenced the construction of an 846-lineal meter, gabion-type flood control structure along barangay Bugnan section of the Coronel River in Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija.
Bugnan is an agricultural community that has long been susceptible to flooding.
Nueva Ecija 2nd District Engineer Elpidio Trinidad shared that to address this issue, DPWH constructed a flood control structure with a length of 830 meters in 2022, amounting to P81.4 million.
The construction of an additional flood control structure in the area, which will augment the existing one, is expected to provide better protection for residents and their crops from the adverse effects of flooding.
Once completed, the new project is expected to prevent the scouring of the river banks and the dirt road that provides residents access to the river and their farmlands.
“We hope that by providing residents with mitigation facilities like this, we can ensure their safety as well as that of their properties. These six-layered gabion walls, when fully completed, may improve crop production and are expected to increase revenue for the residents in the area,” he added.
The P88.3 million worth project was funded under the 2023 General Appropriations Act.
It has an accomplishment rate of 86 percent, as of April and will be completed by October this year. (CLJD-PIA 3)
