TARLAC CITY (PIA) — The Department of Health (DOH) Central Luzon Center for Health Development (CLCHD) supports the use of generic medicines as an alternative to branded ones, as part of its strategy to ensure that all Filipinos have access to affordable health care.

DOH CLCHD Governance Cluster Pharmacist Kristen Kayla Andaya explained that because generic medicines are more affordable, they not only aid in treatment but also help ease financial burden to the patients.

“The affordability of generic medicines better ensures that patients will complete their treatment regimen and get well. Savings from quality generic products can be redirected toward other health priorities,” she said.

Andaya clarified that despite its lower cost, generic medicines contain the same active ingredients as the branded ones, offering the same effectiveness.

Walang malaking pinagkaiba sa bisa. Ang generic at branded na gamot ay may parehong sangkap, dosage, at epekto (There is no significant difference in effectiveness. Generic and branded medicines have the same ingredients, dosage, and effect),” she added.

Andaya also assured the public that generic medicines were approved by the Food and Drug Administration which guaranteed their safety and effectiveness.

The DOH emphasized that every Filipino has the right to health, and cost should not be a barrier to access.

In support of this, the agency continued to support the use of generic medicines, highlighting that they are effective, said, and affordable.

Hindi kailangang gumastos ng malaki para gumaling (There’s no need to spend a lot to get well),” Andaya emphasized.

The DOH reminded the public that free generic medicines are available at barangay health centers, especially for common illnesses and maintenance medicines.

To avail of free generic medicines, individuals were advised to visit health centers or DOH hospitals for check-up, and present a valid prescription along with the valid Identification Card or proof of residency at their barangay health center. (CLJD/AJRR, PIA Region 3-Tarlac)
