TARLAC CITY (PIA) — The Department of Health (DOH) Central Luzon Center for Health Development (CLCHD) urged the public to consider walking and cycling as modes of transportation, emphasizing their benefits to both personal health and environmental sustainability.

DOH CLCHD Environmental and Occupational Health Cluster Engineer Kenneth Lucena said walking or cycling brings different health and environmental benefits to individuals.

One of the benefits mentioned is the lowered harmful emissions of carbon dioxide, known as a major contributor to climate change.

“Walking or biking produces no air pollutants compared to the use of motor vehicles,” Lucena stated.

In addition, Lucena also noted that walking and cycling improve one’s fitness.

“Cleaner air decreases the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, thus improving fitness,” he added.

It was also mentioned that walking and cycling reduce the number of vehicles on the road, which helps avoid heavy traffic flow and lessens idling and fuel exhaustion.

Lucena highlighted that by walking and cycling as modes of transportation, individuals could contribute to the DOH’s goal to promote clean air everywhere.

The DOH reminded the public that they can also practice simple actions such as opening windows, planting trees, and avoiding smoking to help attain clean air in the community. (CLJD/AJRR, PIA Region 3-Tarlac)
