CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga (PIA) — As the Holiday season draws near, the Department of Health (DOH) Central Luzon Center for Health Development (CLCHD) has issued health tips to the public.
DOH CLCHD Health Education and Promotion Officer Theresa Marie Bondoc said the campaign dubbed “Ligtas Christmas 2024” includes three components namely BIYAHEalthy, Healthy Handaan, and Iwas Paputok, to reduce holiday-related health-risks and promote a joyous and safe celebration for all.
“Biyahealthy Ngayong Pasko promotes safe travel, especially for those heading to the provinces for reunions. To do so, the DOH underscores the importance of BLOW-BAG-SET (brake, lights, oil, water, battery, air, gas, self, engine, tire) inspection and advises motorists to avoid distractions and stay well-rested before driving,” Bondoc said.
She also reminds motorists to refrain from alcohol consumption, avoid using mobile devices while driving, and follow traffic rules and regulations.
Bondoc also stressed the importance of wearing protective gears such as helmets and seatbelts to minimize the impacts of accidents.
Under the Healthy Handaan component, DOH reminds the public to be mindful of what and how much they eat to avoid health issues such as diabetes and hypertension.
“We advise the public to limit their consumption of sweet, salty, and fatty foods, which are holiday feast staples. Avoid also the consumption of alcohol during feasts and gatherings,” she mentioned.
The DOH also reminded the public about food safety practices such as proper hygiene and regular handwashing, proper cooking of meals, and proper storage of leftovers to prevent contamination and food poisoning.
Meanwhile, as part of its Iwas Paputok campaign, the agency reiterated its call to avoid the use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices to prevent fireworks-related incidents (FWRIs).
Instead, families are encouraged to participate in community fireworks displays or explore safer alternatives such as banging of pots and pans, blowing car horns, or shaking of coins inside a can to welcome the New Year.
“For FWRIs, immediate first aid should involve washing of the affected area with soap and water, and covering it with sterile gauze. Afterwards, the victim should be brought to the nearest medical facility for proper medical attention to prevent further complications,” Bondoc said.
She added that emergency hotlines should also be readily accessible for immediate assistance during emergencies.
These tips are aligned with the agency’s 8-Point Action Agenda which aims to enhance health literacy among Filipinos and their families, ensuring they are ready for health crises and emergencies to promote disease prevention and health promotion. (CLJD/MJSC, PIA Region 3-Pampanga)
