The Department of Energy (DOE) highlighted SM City Olongapo Central’s achievements in energy efficiency and sustainability, citing the mall as a benchmark for efficient commercial building operations within SM Prime Holdings.
In a recent social media post, the DOE stated:
“SM City Olongapo Central, a five-year-old mall in the heart of Olongapo City, sets a benchmark in energy-efficient building operations within SM Prime Holdings. Through initiatives such as a 1.32 MW solar photovoltaic system, EIFS insulation, ACVS enhancements, variable frequency drives, chiller setpoint adjustments, and natural daylighting, the mall achieved annual energy savings of 2,063,464 kWh, reducing carbon emissions by 1,481.77 tCO₂.”
The DOE further noted that these technical improvements are complemented by energy optimization projects, digital management systems such as Building Management Systems (BMS) and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), as well as sustainability programs including Earth Hour, Trash to Cash, and e-waste collection initiatives.
“The mall also offers electric vehicle charging stations and genset noise reduction measures,” the DOE added, emphasizing the importance of integrating clean mobility and environmental safeguards in commercial developments.
According to the DOE, SM City Olongapo Central’s sustainability efforts are strengthened by SM Prime Holdings’ SPEEDD program, which aims to enhance engineering expertise and promote best practices in energy management across its portfolio.
The recognition underscores how large commercial buildings can leverage innovation, operational excellence, and holistic sustainability strategies to deliver meaningful environmental impact. (30)
