BAGUIO CITY – Officials of the Clark International Airport Corp. (CIAC) led by President and CEO Victor Jose Luciano are in high spirits nowadays despite the global crisis which affected the airline industry in Asia.
Luciano announced during the CIAC road show here that the total international flights at the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) from January to June this year had posted an increase of 27 percent compared to the same period last year.
The Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) recently reported that they carried a total of 10.1 million passengers in May, down by 14.8 percent compared to the same period last year. They added that for the first five months of the year, AAPA international passenger flights were 10.5 percent lower than in same period last year.
Liberty Dungo, CIAC investment promotions specialists, disclosed that DMIA had a total of 208,858 passengers in 2008. She added that “so far for the first six months in 2009, they had 251,719 passengers at the Clark airport.”
Asked by reporters on the reasons why DMIA flights had increased, Luciano said “cheaper flights are available at Clark. DMIA is the low-cost airport of the country.”
Sun. Star Baguio owner and trader Reynaldo Evangelista said they had tried to fly at DMIA several times and have only praises for it.
“The passengers at Clark are handled well and it’s hassle-free to fly at DMIA,” said Bautista, whose son and namesake is the mayor of this city.
Bautista said traveling from Baguio City and nearby areas in North Luzon to Clark has been accessible due to the improved roads and the Subic- Clark-Tarlac expressway.
