DINALUPIHAN, Bataan – This town on Tuesday was placed under state of calamity after its major rivers have swollen brought about by heavy rains inundating 22 of its 46 barangays with flood waters from half to two meters deep.
Mayor Joel Payumo said more than 5,000 families were already affected and they have prepared evacuation measures if the rains continue. Badly hit were the villages of Layac, Sta. Isabel and Daan-Bago.
Layac, which is the exit and entry point to Olongapo City and Manila in the opposite direction, was no longer passable to light vehicles. There was a heavy build-up of traffic in the area near the statue of soldiers.
Flood waters in the residential area of Daan-Bago were already breast-deep.
Payumo supervised sandbagging operations at the embankment of the Daan-Bago River.
Army 2nd Lt. Edgardo Acierto and Sgt. Larry Balleras said they have deployed 20 members of the Army’s 3rd Batallion under the 7th Infantry Division to help barangay residents in sandbagging.
Barangay Kagawad Adan Manalansan feared that if the overflowing flood waters could not be contained, more than 500 houses of about 5,000 residents in Daan-Bago will be affected.
Rushing flood waters were almost touching the lower portions of bridges.
A big area of agricultural lands looked like open seas in Dinalupihan and Hermosa, another Bataan towns.
Flooded barangays include Daungan and Almacen in Hermosa. Residents of Almacen had to use motorized bancas. A portion of the MacArthur Highway in Hermosa was no longer passable to light vehicles.
Also affected by flash floods were some barangays in Abucay and Samal towns.
