CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Central Luzon has started coordinating with Gov. Lilia “Baby” Pineda for the establishment of a sanitary landfill in Pampanga.

This was according to DENR Regional Director Ricardo Calderon in an interview at his office here on Wednesday.

Calderon said he and the Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO) led by Art Punzalan inspected two possible landfill areas in Pampanga.

Calderon said his office had considered the request of Pineda for the DENR to create a landfill in the province to solve the garbage problem.

“We have a good coordination with ENRO. They are easy to work with,” said Calderon.

He disclosed that they inspected two areas in Porac, the biggest town in Pampanga in terms of land area ravaged by lahar flows in the early ‘90s.

Calderon said they will look into other places in the province “feasible to the landfill project.”

He said the DENR doesn’t want to “bump into laws and rights” of land owners such as the Indigenous People.

Pineda, for her part, said they could chipped in some P200 million for the landfill project. She added that the funds will come from the provincial government, barangays and municipalities.
