CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Dengue fever has continued to affect Central Luzon, with a total of 128 cases reported by the Department of Health (DOH) here from last Jan. 1 to 28.

DOH regional director Dr. Rio Magpantay said, however, that he expected dengue cases to be much lower this year amid expectations that a dry El Nino will prevail in the country.

“That would probably minimize the occurrence of pools of water where the dengue-carrying Aedes Aegypti mosquito breeds. But people should remain wary of ailments triggered by dry and hot weather,” he said in an interview.

The DOH regional epidiomology division noted that Nueva Ecija, with 62 dengue cases last January, topped other Central Luzon provinces, although reports from Aurora still had to be submitted.

The report said that also last January, 38 dengue cases were listed in Pampanga, 12 in Zambales, eight in Tarlac, six in Bulacan and two in Bataan. No fatalities were reported.

Magpantay noted, however, that the number of cases was about 50 percent lower than in January last year wherein 255 cases were reported, including three fatalities in Pampanga and two in Bulacan. In the same month last year, Nueva Ecija also had the most number of 98 cases, followed by Pampanga with 72 cases and Bulacan with 51 cases.

Magpantay also said that of last month’s dengue cases, 55 percent were aged 18 or below and that 54.7 percent were male.
