MALOLOS CITY— The first day of new voters’ registration in Bulacan for the coming barangay and sangguniang kabataan elections went smoothly yesterday, but for the damaged phone lines that hindered the daily reporting of proceedures by the Comelec.

Lawyer Elmo Duque, the provincial election supervisor of Bulacan said that voters’ registration in 21 towns and three cities in the province went as scheduled.

He said that there is no untoward report in the first hour of registration.

Duque said the turn-out of registrants was low in the first hours, but they expected more voters to come in register towards the weekend.

“We are calling on first time voters to come, register and not wait for the last day,” he said referring to the deadline of registration on July 31. He stressed that there will be no extension of registration because the Comelec is strictly following its schedule of activities.

As this developed, Duque also said that there is nothing wrong with some possible candidate hauling voters to register.

“It is alright, it is not yet the elections,” he said noting that no law prohibits would-be candidates in helping transport new voters to Comelec offices.

Residents of Guiguinto town disclosed yesterday that some would be candidates are transporting new voters.

While the registration went smoothly on the first day, Duque called on the Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) to immediately fix their telephone lines.

He said that it is the second time in as many election preparations that Comelec-Bulacan’s telephone lines are disconnected.
