BALANGA CITY, Bataan – The Dangerous Drugs Board turned over P2 million to the Bataan Drug Training and Rehabilitation Center at the foot of historic Mt. Samat in Liyang, Pilar town.
The rehabilitation center is expected to officially begin operating after two months.
DDB chairman Vicente “Tito” Sotto III handed the check to Bataan Gov. Enrique Garcia and second district Rep. Albert Garcia in simple ceremonies at the former Kabataang Barangay Center, now renovated into the multi-million drug training and rehab center.
Rep. Garcia said the center at the two-hectare area will operate in two months with its newly-trained staff. He said the P2-million will be used in buying of beds, tables and other fixtures.
The governor’s son said P15 million has so far been spent for the modern drug rehab center that used to be the dilapidated and left out KB Center built during the time of Imee Marcos, son of former President Ferdinand Marcos.
He said the center is a joint undertaking of the provincial government, municipal government of Pilar led by Mayor Carlos Pizarro, Jr., the Department of Health and DDB.
The young Garcia said the new center can accommodate 50 – 100 drug dependents not only from Bataan but in Region 3. The Bataan drug rehab center is the second government center in Region 3 next to the one in Magalang, Pampanga.
Sotto said 70-75 percent of prison inmates all over the country were involved in drug-related crimes. He said such facilities like the drug rehab center are tools that will be of big help to the government’s campaign against illegal drugs.
The former senator pledged that “more funds are coming for the Bataan center.” He said that Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is interested in the treatment of drug dependents. Records showed that there are 1.7 million drug dependents nationwide.
